Each day's entry has about a half a page in length devotion written from the perspective of Jesus to His followers. The focus is being in relationship with Him. There are also three or four scripture verses each day that illustrate the truths mentioned in the devotion. The scriptures are from different translations and usually different parts of the Bible.
This large deluxe version is printed with comfort print, which is very large. It appears big enough that anyone should be able to read it with ease. There is a gift presentation page and a silk ribbon included. The book is leather bound and will make a beautiful gift for any occasion.

Waiting Here for You by Louie Giglio is an Advent book. Starting on November 26 and going through Christmas Eve, there is a short reading for each day. Most days include a passage of scripture, song lyrics or a poem, and a prayer. Some days just have a short prayer to allow for more time for meditation and reflection.
Giglio does a good job of matching the scripture, song/poem, and prayer for each day. They tie together very well and provide a good reflection point for each day. The aesthetics of the book are beautiful. The black and white photos lend to the sense of hopeful waiting that the entries cultivate.
This was the first Advent guide of any kind that I've ever used. It was a good experience, and something I'd like to do again in the future. I'd recommend Waiting Here for You for those who are new to doing anything for Advent, and to those investigating Christianity. Stopping and taking a moment to slow down helps one to focus on the true meaning of the Christmas season.

A Year with G.K. Chesterton: 365 of Wisdom, Wit, and Wonder is a collection of excerpts from Chesterton's writings edited by Kevin Belmonte. Each day there is a Bible verse and at least one excerpt, usually less than a page in length, from one of Chesterton's many published works. On many days there are notes about important events from Chesterton's life or dates of publication for his writings.Chesterton was a fascinating man and prolific author. I'm not very familiar with much of his work, but many of the authors who have shaped my thinking the most cite him and his works as an inspiration in their lives. Therefore, when I had the opportunity to read and review this book, I jumped on it. As far as its quality as a devotional, the entry lengths are just about right for a small taste of Chesterton each morning. This isn't a devotional with a certain theme or to help one accomplish something. Instead, each day offers a glimpse into Chesterton's mind through his writings.
The design and layout of A Year with G.K. Chesterton is aesthetically pleasing. It has very clean and simple lines and font. The appendix of supplemental readings at the back with special entries for "the main festival days of the church" is a nice extra feature. The entries are selected from over fifty publications of Chesterton's work, and vary in nature from poetry, to literary review.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Chesterton; the samples of his work provided will help one decide if one wants to read more of him or not. This book is also obviously great for anyone who is already a fan of Chesterton. Also, anyone who is simply a fan of good writing will enjoy this selection of samples from one of the greatest literary minds of his time.

On This Day in Christian History by Robert J. Morgan, is a devotional chronicling, in the words of its tag line, "365 Amazing and Inspiring Stories About Saints, Martyrs, and Heroes." Each day of the year has about a 3/4 of the page long story about a person in Christian history who was born, died, or did something significant on that day. There is also a Bible verse at the bottom of each page that goes along with the story. In the preface, the author states his purpose in compiling these stories is twofold. He hopes to both chronicle parts of Christian history that it might not be lost forever, as well as use stories from the past to instruct and encourage fellow believers in the present.Overall, this book is a nice collection of stories, covering all of Christian history. There doesn't seem to any bias toward one time in history over another, or any kind of bias toward one view of doctrines over others. On This Day in Christian History serves as a nice introduction to the vast number of people on whose shoulders modern day Christians stand. While not covering anything in depth, it does provide a helpful starting point for anyone who'd like to study certain people or events more closely. There is an index of topics, though an index of people, events, or periods of time would be more helpful considering the subject. I would recommend this to the casual student of Christian history, or someone looking for examples of other's devotion to encourage their own.
